Detecting Cancer Cells

For immune cells to attack cancer cells, they must first know whether they are enemies. In other words, immune cells must recognize cancer cells as enemies. Cancer cells, like normal cells, are originally cells that are part of the body, so even if NK cells can detect abnormal cells, it is not easy to find cancer cells. Originally, the cells of our body have receptor proteins on the surface of the cell that proves having a unique ID for your body. This protein is called ‘MHC’, and many cancer cells hide MHC. Fortunately, NK cells have receptors that detect defective MHC in cancer cells, and NK cells have ‘activating receptors’ and ‘inhibitory receptors’ on the cell surface that can detect altered receptor proteins. NK cells can distinguish between normal cells and cancer cells by expressing various innate immune receptors on the cell surface. NK cells recognize target cells (such as cancer cells) through various activating or inhibitory receptors on the cell surface, and regulate their activity through a comprehensive signaling system induced within them.
